The Philip Merrill Environmental Center was the first building in the world to receive the LEED Platinum rating from the U.S. Green Building Council. The pioneering project’s success demonstrates that sustainable design is feasible, cost-effective, and beautiful. Designed to operate in harmony with its surroundings; while minimizing its impact on the Chesapeake Bay and its ecosystems, the Center is home to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, which is dedicated to environmental advocacy and education. The Center incorporates a variety of eco-friendly features, such as recycled materials, renewable resources, and both passive and active solar power.
